“The Bucks County Youth Council is committed to creating an integrated system of communication, activities, and partnerships resulting in local and regional youth services providers’ exchange of ideas and alignment of strategic goals in the service of the current needs of Bucks County youth.”

ENABLING STRATEGIES


The Youth Council achieves its goals through its enabling strategies of:

•Working toward the integrated alignment of a triad-approach of providing workforce skills development, academic achievement, and leadership skills enrichment to our Out-of-School Youth,

•Forming collaborative unions with local and regional providers of youth programming to leverage time, talents and expertise of all providers,

•Designing systems of communication to effectively disseminate information on youth programs' resources and opportunities to the community-at-large (including High Priority Industries, School Districts, and Community Based Organizations)

•Determining gaps in services and skills in youth in our community,

•Committing our resources to the continuous and targeted resolution of such identified gaps.

 

 Eligibility criteria may apply to certain programs funded by the BC-WIB, Inc.

The PA CareerLink Bucks County Youth Center serves youth of Bucks County, ages 16 to 21. Services are integrated by using a 3-track approach that includes Academic Achievement, Workforce Development, and Youth Development.

Academic Achievement, Arbor Education & Training:

  • Remedial education & GED Preparation
  • Post-Secondary Education Assistance
  • Customer Service Certification

GED Graduation will be held on Thursday, June 24, 2010 at the Bucks County Community College, Bristol Campus. The graduation is co-sponsored by the Bucks County Community College and Bucks County Workforce Investment Board, Inc.

Job Club is held once a month in the PA CareerLink Bucks County Youth Center. The Job Club is open to former and current youth participants. Each month there is a new topic to discuss and learn about!

Career Exploration Camp

The BC-WIB in partnership with the YWCA of Bucks County conducted Career Exploration Camps in June and August  2010 for youth ages 9 to 14.  The camp was held at Country Commons Community Room, Bensalem.  Career Camps included:

  • Advanced Manufacturing Camp
  • Green Careers Camp
  • Information & Communications Camp
  • Life Sciences Camp

 

Summer Youth Work Experience Programs

The Bucks County Workforce Investment Board, Inc. sponsored Summer Youth Employment Programs in summer 2010. The programs provided valuable employability skills training, in addition to paid work experience.  Youth have to had met specified eligibility criteria.  The following programs were operated:

Work Experience Program 

  • Youth ages 18 to 24
  • Eight-week program starting July 6, 2010
  • Youth will complete a 2 week paid in-classroom employability skills training
  • Youth will be placed with a local employer to gain work experience

Service Learning Program

  • Youth ages 14 to 17
  • Eight week program starting July 6, 2010
  • Service Learning sites: Neshaminy State Park, Churchville Nature Center, Upper Bucks County Technical School
  • Youth will recieve a stipend for their participation

Service Learning Program

  • Youth ages 14 to 17 who attend Bucks County Technical High School
  • Eight week paid Service Learning Program that focuses on Building & Construction and Information & Communication Services

In summer 2009, the BC-WIB coordinated Summer Youth Work Experience Programs in two tracks: Service Learning & Work Experience Programs.

Service Learning Programs were operated by Bucks County Technical High School and Bucks County Community College and were for youth ages 14 to 17 who were looking to gain employability skills and experience. 

Bucks County Technical High School projects included:

  • Installation of waterless urinals
  • Refurbished photo lab
  • Landscaping at senior center
  • Refurbished & installed computers at daycare and senior center

Bucks County Community College projects included:

  • A+ Comupter Certification
  • Refubished computers and donated them to local non-profit agencies

Work Experience Programs were for youth/young adults ages 18 to 24 who were looking to gain employment experience and/or training. Arbor Education & Training coordinated the Work Experience Programs.

Employment opportunities included:

  • Landscaping
  • Child Care
  • Retail
  • Clerical
  • Warehouse

Eligibility criteria applies for all programs.

WIB 180- Helping Bucks County Youth Turn It Around

WIB 180- Together, we can turn it around, for one kid, for your business, and for Bucks County!

On December 14, 2009, the Bucks County Workforce Investment Board, Inc. launched the WIB 180-an initiative to connect at-risk youth to workplace opportunities.  Employers can choose from any of the five levels of committment, which include:

  • Job Shadowing
  • Mentoring
  • Internships
  • On-the-Job Training Opportunities
  • Employment
