Industry Partnerships In today’s economy, businesses need highly skilled workers, workers need good jobs and career opportunities, and the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and its economic regions need top quality companies and workers. Industry Partnerships are a particular kind of “workforce intermediary,” that bring together multiple employers and workers, or worker representatives when appropriate, in the same industry cluster to address common or overlapping human capital needs. Industry Partnerships are a key institutional innovation for meeting the skills needs of businesses, the career goals of workers, and the economic development goals of the Commonwealth.
The Commonwealth is making funds available ranging from $5,000 to $150,000 to strengthen existing partnerships and seed fund the development of new partnerships in nine targeted industry clusters.
Targeted Industry Clusters The Commonwealth’s targeted industry clusters and eight sub-clusters were based on detailed industry analysis, the local knowledge of leading Local Workforce Investment Boards, and input from educators and representatives of the Departments of Labor & Industry and Community and Economic Development. Each of the targeted industry clusters consists of a group of industries that are closely linked by common product markets, labor pools, similar technologies, supply chains, and/or other economic ties. Those industries are:
Advanced Materials and Diversified Manufacturing:
Agriculture and Food Processing
Building and Construction
Business and Financial Services
Education
Energy
Information and Communication Services
Logistics and Transportation
Lumber, Wood and Paper
Life Sciences including Bio-Medical and Health Care
Bucks County Workforce Investment Board Summer Work Experience for Youth
The Bucks County Workforce Investment Board (BC-WIB) was allocated a significant amount of funds to provide summer work experiences to youth ages 14 to 24 in an effort to create a pipeline of trained workers in our local workforce.
Prospective youth participants will work with the PA CareerLink Bucks County Youth Center to determine their eligibility for the program and on employability skills training and job placement assistance. In addition, Youth Center staff will be administering Workforce Development related assessments and the WorkKeys certification to the youth participants. However, to make this project successful, we are seeking employers to provide meaningful, eight week work experiences to our youth and young adult participants during the summer months.
Benefits to the employer include:
• Youth participant wages to be paid by the Bucks County WIB
• Case management services to the youth
• Transportation assistance for the youth
• An opportunity to positively impact the local workforce and economy
Employer responsibilities include:
• Comply with child labor laws, and applicable employment laws
• Ensure supervisors and staff have appropriate child abuse and criminal record background checks
• Oversee, submit, and retain timesheets for all youth participants
• Provide evaluations of performance to case managers
